I Did Not Dig Up My Dahlias

I could not dig up my dahlias last fall. I was too busy falling down and going to the Emergency Room.

Here they are.

Firepot dahlia
Snow Country dahlia

They survived without my digging them, drying them, cleaning them and then storing them in shoeboxes with vermiculite.

What else have I been doing the hard way?

Sigh.

Do not answer that.

FLAW. I mean FLOW.

  1. My dahlias survived several days of 12F in January 2024. That’s an extreme for here; usual lowest winter temp is about 20F. Drainage is excellent here; don’t know if that was a factor.

I think you have to dig them up in places where the ground freezes

  2. That Firepot one is so beautiful! Where I live (west coast of Canada) dahlias are pretty resilient because the winters are usually temperate. But last winter was cold! So I only have a few, in pots, and I was too busy to buy and plant more. Yours are really wonderful.
